GRENADA — After facing one powerhouse in Class AA varsity girls’ basketball in Brookhaven Academy last Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the South State Tournament, the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels faced another powerhouse just a few days later.
The Lady Rebels’ opposition Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the MAIS Class AA State Tournament being held at Kirk Academy was none other than the North State champion and six-time defending state champion Leake Academy Rebelettes.
ACCS, the South No. 4 seed, had a hard time getting into any kind of a flow on offense against Leake Academy in the first half and the Rebelettes ended up with five players in double figures in an easy 69-35 win over the Lady Rebels.
“To God be the Glory, in victory and defeat. We’re thankful to get to the opportunity to get to the state tournament. That was huge. But I take my hat off to Leake,” ACCS head coach Melanie Hall said. “Leake is just a very fine ball club. They’re very disciplined, very well-coached, very fast.”
A combination of defense made it tough for the Lady Rebels not only to get good looks at the basket, but also to maintain possession when they had the ball.
“They ran a 2-3 matchup zone. Then they ran a half-court trap out of that,” Hall said. “When we had the ball, it was one and done.”
Especially in the first half. Leake jumped out to a 27-9 lead over ACCS at the end of the first quarter and then took a 45-17 lead into halftime. The Lady Rebels did play better in the second half, but they were in too deep of a hole to dig out of.
Hannah Peoples and Anna Katherine Nowell led Leake Academy (36-2) with 14 points each. Mary Grace Key scored 11 points while Chloe Thaggard and Hannah Moore chipped with 10 points apiece.
“One of the main things that really hurt us was they had second and third attempts at the basket. They outrebounded us. But they were just a better ball team,” Hall said. “I thought our girls fought hard the second half. Our intensity was better in the second half than it was in the first half. I’m proud of my team for what they were able to accomplish as a team this year.”
ACCS (28-8) was led by Tory Laird with 13 points. Abby Givens finished with eight points and Nikki Worthy added six points.
