NATCHEZ — Adams County Christian School’s Johnny Smith felt like he gave away the team’s Friday night contest against Amite School Center.

Smith gave up four runs in the top of the seventh inning to allow ASC to take a 10-7 lead going into ACCS’s final at bat.

But a Chris Carrell one-out triple and four good at bats by ACCS players that led to four consecutive walks gave Smith a chance at redemption.

Smith came to the plate with the bases loaded and ACCS trailing 10-9. He took the first two balls of the at bat, then saw a strike and finally hammered a one-hopper past the ASC third baseman. Jake Brumfield and Brandon Ross came around to score the tying and winning runs to give the Rebels their second-consecutive win over ASC.

“First off I felt like I blew the game pitching,” Smith said. “But we got the bases loaded with walks, and I got two balls and thought, ‘I’m going to walk in the winning run.’

“He threw a strike and then I hit the next one down the third-base line.”

Smith, who went 2-3 with three RBIs, said he knew he hit the ball well enough for it to get through and score the winning run.

ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said he was pleased with the way his team battled back for the win.

“I’m glad we didn’t give up,” McKeivier said. “We still have fight in us.”

McKeivier said he was glad to see more patient at-bats from his players in the seventh inning.

“I liked our approach at the plate a lot better (than in previous innings),” he said.

ACCS drew four walks in the final inning and Carrell’s triple and Smith’s game-winning single both came after the two players saw several pitches.

Four ACCS pitchers saw action in the game, and Tyler Buckles ended up getting the win for the Rebels. Buckles came in for Smith in the seventh inning and got out of a bases-loaded jam to get the final two outs of the inning to keep ACCS within striking distance.

Carrell finished his night at the plate with a single and a triple in five at-bats. He scored two runs in the game. Buckles also had a good night at the plate with two infield singles that led to an RBI and a run scored.

ASC struck first in the second inning when Aaron Toler scored after reaching on a single.

ACCS answered right back in the bottom of the inning to take the lead.

Tyler Brumfield scored on a Cody Rhinehart single, Rhinehart scored on a Tanner Martin single and Martin scored on a single by Buckles to give ACCS a 3-1 lead.

ASC got three runs on two walks and three hits in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead back.

One of those ASC hits was a triple to deep left field by Blake Terrell that sent ACCS left fielder Christopher Perry head first into the wall. Perry stayed on the ground injured as two ASC runners came around to score. Perry laid near the left-field wall for a couple of minutes but got up OK and stayed in the game. Martin also suffered an injury for ACCS in the contest and was forced to leave the game after the second inning.

ASC then added two runs on four walks and one hit in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-3.

ACCS took the lead in the bottom of the sixth by scoring four runs. Smith and Lester Wells each had RBIs in the inning.

ASC took the lead back in the top of the seventh, and ACCS took the lead for good in the bottom half of the seventh.

The four ACCS pitchers — Jake Brumfield, Ethan Loyed, Smith and Buckles — combined to walk nine ASC batters in the game, and McKeivier said that he was disappointed that his pitchers had trouble finding the strike zone.

ASC helped ACCS out with six errors in the contest. Both teams finished the game with 10 hits.

The win brings ACCS to 2-2 on the season. The Rebels will face Central Hinds Monday.
