MONTEREY — Monterey High School may have been winless entering into Tuesday’s contest against Harrisonburg High School, but the Lady Wolves weren’t exactly facing creampuff teams.

Monterey has played against teams in higher classifications — including Block and Menard — and had several close games, including a couple of games in which the Lady Wolves lost by just one run.

The Lady Wolves finally picked up their first win of the season thanks to the pitching and hitting of both Ellen Bairnsfather and Paige Bryan as they defeated the Lady Bulldogs 7-2.

“We’ve got to play these tough games to get ready for district,” Monterey head coach Hazel Brallier said. “I kept telling them not to get down on themselves. We’ve been hitting the ball well. It just hasn’t been ending the way we wanted.”

The Lady Wolves scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning and three runs in the bottom of the third.

“They did an excellent job. We came out hitting,” Brallier said.

Monterey definitely hit the ball well against Harrisonburg. Bairnsfather went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two runs batted in. Bailey New was 3-for-4 and Ashley Wilson was 2-for-3. Karlee Woodruff went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI and Jody Duncan had a double..

Bairnsfather was also the starting pitcher for the Lady Wolves and kept the Lady Bulldogs scoreless over four innings while allowing just two hits. She struck out four batters and walked just one.

“Ellen’s just a solid player. She’s a hard worker. If you need an athlete, she’s an athlete. She’s a team leader.” Brallier said.

Brallier added that Bairnsfather will be signing with LSU-Alexandria on Friday.

Byran pitched the final three innings and gave up two runs on three hits in the top of the seventh inning. She went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Monterey (1-4) plays at Block on Thursday at 4 p.m. The varsity game will take place first with the varsity game to follow.

“We played them the first game of the season. We had six errors in that game. We didn’t hit too well that game. We only had five hits,” Brallier said.

Vidalia 9, Block 8

VIDALIA — Back-to-back walks with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning brought in the game-tying and game-winning runs as the Vidalia Lady Vikings rallied to defeat the Block Lady Bears Tuesday afternoon.

Tyler Rogers started the bottom of the seventh with a hard ground ball to shortstop that ended up being a single. However, she was thrown out on a bloop single by Kaitlyn Temple. Savannah McCarver walked to put runners at first and second. Cassie Gonzales was not able to advance the runners after an infield fly for the second out.

Then Block’s Machaela Smith had problems with the strike zone. She first walked Emily Meyers to load the bases. Then Kennedy Beard walked to bring in Temple to make in an 8-8 game. Winning pitcher Laura Perilloux walked on a full count to bring in McCarver with the game-winning run.

Vidalia had already rallied twice to take the lead in this game. The Lady Vikings scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to go ahead 2-1 and then appeared to take control of the game after scoring five runs in the bottom of the third that turned a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 lead.

But just like the Lady Vikings, the Lady Bears rallied a second time in this game by scoring one run in the top of the fourth and three runs in the top of the sixth for an 8-7 lead.

Katlyn Thornton went 3-for-4 and Kelsie Partridge was 2-for-4 with a double for Vidalia, which had nine hits. Block ended up with 10 hits and was led by Blake, who went 3-for-4 with two doubles.

Vidalia (5-4) hosts Caldwell Parish next Monday at 4 p.m. The junior varsity game starts first and the varsity game will follow.
