JONESVILLE, La. — Just two days after a heartbreaking loss to Vidalia, Block’s varsity fast-pitch softball team didn’t wait very long to get back on track.

The Lady Bears got a strong pitching performance from Kayla Smith as she pitched a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 win over the Monterey Lady Wolves on a warm and breezy Thursday afternoon.

Smith struck out six batters while allowing six hits and walking just one batter to pick up the win. Paige Bryan was tagged with the loss despite holding Block to just four hits while striking out one and walking one.

“We weren’t smart base runners (today),” Monterey head coach Hazel Brallier said. “We were good defensively. We just couldn’t manufacture those runs.”

Brallier specifically mentioned the top of the fifth inning as a pivotal point in the ball game. Trailing 2-0, the Lady Wolves had runners on first and second when Ellen Bairnsfather singled, and Brallier tried to send Bryan in. However, Bryan was thrown out a home plate and the shutout was still intact.

Bryan had two of Block’s four base hits in three appearances.

The Lady Bears scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI ground out by Molly Swayze. Then with two outs in the bottom of the third, Michaela Smith singled to score another run for the Lady Bears.

Block’s final run of the game occurred in the bottom of the sixth. Swayze hit a double and then stole third base. Swayze, who finished 2-for-3, then scored on a sacrifice fly.

Both Monterey (1-5) and Block (5-3) will next play at the ASH (Alexandria Senior High) Tournament this weekend.

Block will take on Rosepine at 4 p.m. today at the Cabrini Sports Complex in Alexandria, La. On Saturday the Lady Bears go up against Church Point at 3 p.m. and Eunice at 5 p.m. with both of those games taking place at Johnny Downs Sports Complex, which is a few miles west of Alexandria on the corner of Louisiana Highway 28 West and Vandenburg Drive.

Monterey faces off with Montgomery at 4 p.m. today at the Cabrini Sports Complex. Then on Saturday, the Lady Wolves have two more games at the Cabrini Sports Complex — first against St. Mary’s at 3 p.m. and then versus Stanley at 5 p.m.
