Last week of February saw extra luck

Feb. 29 brought extra luck to the week for many area residents, especially those such as Hannah White and Camden Josiah Earls, who celebrated birthdays that won’t truly roll around for another four years.

Let’s review a few other special projects and fun days ushered in by the last week of February and the first days of March.

4 Brandon O’Conner, a sixth-grader at Ferriday Junior High, did something few career musicians dare even try. He belted out Whitney Houston’s lyrics in front of a crowd. O’Conner stole the show during his school’s Black History Month program, but there’s more to this boy than the vocals. Last year, O’Conner scored the highest score in his school on state tests. He performs well on stage and in the classroom and will surely have a bright future.

4 The Natchez Trace Parkway Association is working to create a local Trace chapter in Natchez to promote historical sights along this historic route. It would be great to have locals focusing on our Trace treasures for locals and visitors.

4 Many area schools celebrated Read Across America day Friday, spending extra time with a good book. A number of community volunteers spent a portion of the day in area schools, reliving their Dr. Seuss memories.

4 If you haven’t taken a spin through the Liberty Road bridge area, check it out soon and see what the power of the people can do. Thanks to a group of volunteers who pruned and primped one of our main entryways to town. Let’s keep it up!

4 Shane Seyfarth and family are headed to the ski slopes, thanks to a spectacular turnout — both in the number of people and the dollars raised — Saturday. It’s great to see our community rally around one of its own and raise the funds to ease the worries of a man battling a serious illness.

As a new week begins, Pilgrimage tourists will soon arrive. Let’s get ready!
