NATCHEZ — Four Adams County Christian School girls, one ACCS boy and two Trinity Episcopal boys were named to the MAIS District 5-AA All-District squad.
Brandis White, Tory Laird, Jessica Reynolds and Abby Givens were selected to the All-District girls squad, and ACCS’s Brandon Walker and Trinity’s Tanner Cage and Sky Logan were named to the All-District boys team.
For ACCS head coach Melanie Hall, the selection of her four girls was interesting, since all four of them have played the point guard position at one point or another during their playing career.
“It’s helped us tremendously, especially with Abby, because she played the four (power forward), and she gave people fits with the mismatches, because she could go either inside or outside,” Hall said.
The teams starting point guard, Brandis White, is very versatile with her game, Hall said.
“She brought so much to the team; she’s very talented,” Hall said. “If she continues to work hard, she’ll play at the next level. She’s a true point guard, in that she’s looking to run the offense and make the pass first.”
Laird, who played point guard in junior high school, is the Lady Rebels’ starting shooting guard, and Hall said Laird’s toughness was a big asset to the team.
“She’s tough as nails, and I was fortunate, because I feel like she’s a true shooting guard playing that position,” Hall said. “Being able to move her (from the point) was very good for us.”
Reynolds, who came over from WCCA, where she played point guard, was another player that Hall said plays with a lot of toughness.
“She’s gritty, and she has one speed, and that’s all out,” Hall said. “He body went through some stuff this season going after balls. Any loose ball was Jessica’s. She was going after it, and she was going to get it. She’s a fun player to watch, because she works so hard.”
Hall also said Nikki Worthy, who was named honorable mention, came on strong in the latter part of the year for the Lady Rebels.
“We feel she would have been up there with the other four if she produced at the beginning of the season the way she did at the end,” Hall said.
With no seniors on this year’s team, which made it to the state tournament round in Double-A, Hall said she feels blessed to have each of her starters returning next season.
ACCS boys
ACCS boys basketball coach Rick Fife said he was pleased with Walker’s play this past season.
“He was by far the best rebounder we had on the team,” Fife said. “We played both power forward and center, and he’s a junior this year, so he’ll be back. I think he’s going to make a big difference in the program.
“He brings leadership on the court and (especially) on the defensive end. The rebounding is definitely a plus.”
Trinity Episcopal boys
Saints boys basketball coach David King said Cage made a big difference for this year’s Trinity team running the offense at point guard.
“Tanner was the difference,” King said. “He was just an outstanding leader on the court defensively and offensively. He was a natural scorer, but he was able to pass the ball equally, too. He was just an all-around outstanding basketball player for us.”
Logan, who plays forward, was a big advantage for the Saints given his size, King said.
“Sky’s just a big guy, and everyone associates him with football, but he has really good hands and great feet. He’s a tough matchup for a lot of teams.
“He’s athletic and big, and really good around the goal. He and Tanner just had a knack for playing the game of basketball.”
