NATCHEZ — A private memorial service honoring Sarah McClain Edgin, 88, of Natchez, who died Saturday, March 3, 2012, at her residence, will be at 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Edgin was born April 11, 1923, in Tutwiler, the daughter of Leon Clyde McClain and Pearl George McClain. She grew up and graduated high school in Tallulah, La. Eventually relocating to Natchez, Mrs. Edgin began a longtime career at Natchez Water Works. In October of 1943, she married the late Richard A. Edgin Sr. of Wichita Falls, Texas. They resided in Natchez where they raised their family.

Mrs. Edgin enjoyed volunteering at Auburn Antebellum Home. Her passion was Auburn. Her husband once said, “She lived and breathed Auburn.” Passing down the oral history and stories of the home brought her true joy. She was a dedicated member of the Auburn Garden Club.

Mrs. Edgin was also an active Eastern Star and a member of the First Baptist Church in Natchez. She was a celebrated cook. Shopping was her guilty pleasure and always loved a bargain. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her great happiness, all the time spent with them was treasured.

Sarah Edgin lived a rich 88 years and leaves behind a legacy that will be unmatched.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three siblings, Louise McClain McLemore, J.W. McClain and Edith McClain Ball; and her husband, Richard A. Edgin Sr.

Survivors include one daughter, Donna Edgin Wood of Atlanta; one son, Richard A. Edgin Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Natchez; four grandchildren, Corbett Edgin of Boulder, Colo., Cassandra Ruley and husband, Richard, of Tuscan, Ariz., Collin Edgin and wife, Alexandra, of Brandon and Richard A. Edgin III and wife, Katie-Grace, of Natchez; three siblings, Thelma Pirkle of Natchez, George McClain of Vidalia and Mabel Campbell of Baton Rouge; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

The family expresses their deep gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Stubbs, Mark Newman, Helen Kagel and the number of caregivers who helped care for Mrs. Edgin over the years.

Mrs. Edgin’s remains were donated to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for research purposes.
