BATON ROUGE, La. – Notre Dame defeated No. 11 LSU 7-1 Sunday to snap the Tigers’ eight-game win streak.
LSU (13-3) will have another crack at the Irish (7-5) Monday at 6:30 p.m. as freshman right-hander Aaron Nola (2-0) will take the mound for the Tigers.
Notre Dame’s Sean Fitzgerald (2-1) picked up the victory Sunday after pitching eight innings and allowing six hits, one run (one earned), one walk and striking out four. Leftfielder Conor Biggio led the Irish with two hits and three RBIs.
LSU sophomore Kurt McCune (1-2) took the loss for LSU after working three innings and giving up six hits and five runs with one strikeout.
“It was one of those days when things didn’t seem to go our way, and you have to credit Notre Dame for playing a great ball game,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “We had won eight games in a row, and over the course of season, you’re going to have days like this. The good news is we have an opportunity to come right back and play Monday night and try to rebound from a tough loss.”
Reliever Joe Broussard pitched admirably for the Tigers and fired four innings, permitted two runs (one earned), three hits, one walk and he struck out one.
