Prep baseball: Cathedral beats Monterey

MONTEREY — Blake Martin pitched four scoreless innings and struck out six batters as the Cathedral Green Wave rolled past the Monterey Wolves 12-1 Tuesday afternoon.

Martin gave up just two hits and walked two in those four innings on his way to improving his record on the mound to 4-1. Monterey scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh to avoid the shutout.

Caleb Upton went 4-for-4 with two doubles and Kyle Bradley was 3-for-4. Thomas Garrity and Austin Chauvin each had two hits with one of them being a double. As a team Cathedral ended up with 15 base hits.

The Green Wave was only up 2-0 after three innings of play before scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning, three runs in the top of the sixth and five runs in the top of the seventh.

Cathedral (4-3) opens up MHSAA Region 7-1A action next Tuesday at home against West Lincoln with the junior varsity game at 5 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m.

Monterey (5-4) will next play at the Grace Christian Tournament in Alexandria, La. The Wolves have two games on Friday – first against St. Joseph at 5:15 p.m. and then against Evans at 7:30 p.m.

ACCS ties Simpson Academy, defeats East Rankin

JACKSON — A slugfest between the Adams County Christian School Rebels and the Simpson Academy Cougars resulted in an 11-11 tie Tuesday afternoon after the game was called due to the time limit.

And that was ACCS’s first game of the day at the Smith Wills 2012 Spring Break Classic at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson. The Rebels then annihilated the East Rankin Academy Patriots 11-2 to improve to 9-2-1 overall.

ACCS continues play today at the Smith Wills 2012 Spring Break Classic against an opponent to be determined.

Buckeye 4, Block 3

BUCKEYE, La. — Block played error-free defense for six innings and had a 3-2 lead going into the seventh inning. And it was the bottom of that inning where the Bears unraveled.

Block committed all three of its errors in that half-inning and that allowed Buckeye to score two runs and rally for the win Tuesday night.

Taylor Perron got the start for the Bears allowed just two runs on two hits while striking out five and walking four with one hit batter. Vashawn Davis came in in the bottom of the seventh and did not record a single out. Davis had a double for Block.

Michael Wilson went the distance for Buckeye (9-1) as he allowed three runs on just three hits with 10 strikeouts and only one walk. Blake Butler went 2-for-5 for the Panthers.

Block (3-6) next plays at the Caldwell Parish Tournament and will go up against host Caldwell Parish Friday at 7 p.m.

Ben’s Ford 11, WCCA 5

BOGALUSA, La. — The Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams lost to the Ben’s Ford Christian School Eagles in a non-district game Tuesday afternoon. No other information on the game was available.

WCCA (1-4) hosts Ben’s Ford Friday with the JV game at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
