JACKSON — Two of the top teams in their respective classifications met Wednesday night in the championship game of the Smith Wills 2012 Spring Break Classic when Adams County Christian School took on Tri-County Academy.

In the battle of the Rebels under the lights at Smith Wills Stadium, Lane Williams held ACCS to just one run on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game performance in leading Tri-County Academy to a 5-1 victory.

“He was throwing the ball pretty well. He was throwing 85, 86 (miles per hour). He had a good fastball and a good slider,” ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said about Williams. “We were hitting the ball well. We were just hitting it to people. We didn’t take advantage of runners in scoring position. He was very impressive on the mound tonight.”

Walks by starting pitcher Ethan Loyed and four errors by ACCS were also key factors in the outcome of this game. Tri-County, the home team in the title game, scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and scored two more runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead.

“It was the walks (that were the difference).” McKeivier said. “They were able to get runners on base. We weren’t able to get runners in scoring position by only a handful of times. We didn’t get the breaks when we needed them.”

Loyed was the losing pitcher as he allowed five runs on four hits, struck out three batters, walked six and hit one batter in five innings. Despite walking so many batters, overall McKeivier said he was pleased with Loyed’s outing.

“The one thing I wish he did was fill up the strike zone. Keep his pitch count low. Give the defense a chance,” McKeivier said. “The four errors didn’t help him out either.”

Wade Simpson pitched the sixth inning and he struck out one and walked one. Both teams scored one run in the fifth inning.

ACCS (9-3-1) plays host to Wilkinson County Christian Academy next Monday at 7 p.m.
