FERRIDAY — Fresh off the heels of a no-hitter by teammate Daniel Dunaway Thursday night, Jake Winston’s turn came at a most opportune time.

After losing the first game of a double-header to Silliman Institute Friday night, Trinity needed a pick-me-up — and Winston delivered.

The Trinity senior threw seven innings of shutout ball, surrendered just two walks and had 10 strikeouts, all on 86 pitches, in Trinity’s 5-0 win in Game 2. Winston said after the game that it was a nice feeling, but it wasn’t quite so easy while it was happening.

“Now that’s it’s over with, it feels pretty good,” Winston said. “During the game I didn’t think much about it until the sixth inning, and I’d say I started rushing it a little bit and got wild.

“When the seventh inning got there, I took a few deep breaths and said, ‘Forget the no-hitter, let’s get the win.’ So I settled down after that.”

Dunaway’s no-hitter on Thursday came against Amite School Center, and Winston admitted that it was kind of neat to throw one right after Dunaway did.

“He didn’t say anything during the game, but after the game he was the first one to tell me great job,” Winston said. “He told me we went back-to-back, and we kind of laughed about it afterward.”

Trinity scored first in the bottom of the second inning when Jared Hedrick doubled in Sky Logan and Caleb Gillespie. Later in the inning, Quinton Logan scored on a fielder’s choice by Trey Fleming.

Trinity tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning when Sky Logan singled home Dunaway and Quinton Logan double in Winston.

Silliman 5, Trinity 4, 10 innings

Trinity resumed its game against Silliman that was suspended in the top of the tenth on March 5 because of lighting issues at Silliman’s home stadium.

The game was tied 1-1, and the Saints immediately scored three runs, but the Trinity defense committed three errors in the bottom of the tenth, allowing Silliman to tally four runs and walk off with the win.

“I think we kind of forgot that we were in the 10th inning,” Winston said. “It felt like a fresh game, and we got a few errors. When they went ahead, we figured we’d just get another out and get the run back, and then the game was over.”

Winston singled in the top of the 10th to score Fleming, then a fielding error by Silliman allowed Andrew Moroney and Winston to score, making it 4-1 Trinity.

But after the Saints blew it in the bottom half of the frame, Winston said the players knew they had to come back strong in Game 2.

“We talked about it after the game, and I thought we bounced back well,” Winston said

Moroney took the loss in Game 1, giving up four runs, zero earned, in 1 1/3 innings pitched.

Trinity (2-2) will play at Centreville Monday.
