COLUMBIA, La. — The Block Bears were able to salvage one win at the Caldwell Parish Tournament as they defeated the Bolton Bears 6-1 Saturday afternoon after dropping their first two games at this tournament.
With the win, Block improved to 4-8 overall and hosts St. Mary’s in an LHSAA District 4-1A game at 4 p.m. Monday.
Taylor Perron was the winning pitcher for Block despite being having an up-and-down performance on the mound. Perron allowed just one run on one hit and struck out four batters in seven innings. However, he also walked five batters and hit two batters. But the defense behind him came through as the Bears from Jonesville, La. committed no errors.
Bolton scored its one run in the top of the first inning. Block responded with six runs over a four-inning stretch, starting with a three-run rally in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good.
Block added to its lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and one run in the bottom of the fourth. Even though Davis Flower limited Block to just three hits, Tanner Coldiron had two of them in three at-bats, including a double. Flower was also inconsistent on the mound as he struck out seven, walked six and hit one batter.
In its first game of the day, Block was annihilated by the Mangham Dragons 10-1 thanks in large part to the pitching of Trey Currington.
Currington had his way with Block’s batters in a complete-game outing. He gave up just one run on two hits, struck out 14 batters and walked four. Seth Parker hit a home run for Mangham.
Will Hawthorne suffered the loss as he gave up 10 runs on nine hits, six walks and one hit batter and struck out two in seven innings. Coldiron doubled for the Bears.
On Friday night, the host Caldwell Parish Spartans rolled to a 13-2 win over Block in just five innings.
Dylan Mayo was the losing pitcher for Block after allowing 11 runs on four hits while striking out three and walking four to go with four hit batters. Block’s only hit was a triple by Coldiron.
