NATCHEZ — Jake Brumfield was dominant on the mound; ACCS pounded out 10 hits and defensively made no errors to put together one of the team’s most complete performances of the season to open up MAIS District 5-AA play Tuesday night with a 9-0 win over Brookhaven Academy.

“In one word — proud,” ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said about his team’s performance. “That was one of the most total efforts we’ve put together.

“I challenged the guys last night (after a win over WCCA) that this would be the biggest game so far this year, and they came out mentally ready to play.”

The game looked like it was going to be a pitchers’ duel through the first three innings with Brumfield and Brookhaven’s Gage Posey trading scoreless innings. But Brumfield had more bullets in his chamber and was able to outlast Posey through the last four innings to get the win.

Brumfield went all seven innings and gave up just two hits and three walks while striking out seven Cougar batters.

“In the first inning or two (Brumfield) struggled to locate his breaking stuff, but he found it after that,” McKeivier said. “I’ve always said Jake is one of the best pitchers in the state, and he pitched well tonight.”

ACCS started doing damage in the bottom of the fourth inning. Posey actually struck out the first three batters in the frame, but Brumfield was able to reach on a pass ball after his strike out which would have resulted in the second out of the inning.

Lester Wells, who was running for Brumfield, came around to score on an RBI single by Brandon Ross. Tyler Brumfield singled before Ross’ at bat and later scored on an RBI walk by Cody Rhinehart. ACCS left the bases loaded after Rhinehart’s walk when Tyler Buckles grounded out to first base, and the Rebels led 2-0 after four complete innings.

ACCS used another two-out rally to come away with three runs in the fifth inning. Jake Brumfield started the rally with a two-out single. Christopher Perry followed with a single of his own, and Tyler Brumfield walked to follow Perry.

Wells scored again while running for Brumfield on a RBI walk by Ross. Perry came around on a RBI single by Johnny Smith, and Tyler Brumfield scored on an error to push the Rebels lead to 5-0.

The Rebels blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on four hits and two Brookhaven errors.

Chris Carrell started the inning with a double, Tanner Martin reached on an error that scored Carrell and Perry knocked in Martin with a double of his own.

Tyler Brumfield then singled to score Perry. Wells came in again, this time to run for Tyler Brumfield, and scored on a throwing error after Smith had reached on an infield single.

“We got runners on base and put the ball in play to score some runs,” McKeivier said.

Smith, Perry and Tyler Brumfield each had two hits in the game for the Rebels.

McKeivier said Tuesday night’s win was a big one for ACCS.

“It starts us out at 1-0 versus a great team, but it’s still early,” he said. “We still have to play our district games and continue to do what we’re doing.”

The win pushed ACCS to 11-3-1 on the season and 1-0 in district. The same two teams will face off again Friday at Brookhaven.
