Brumfield, ACCS shut out Columbia Aca.

NATCHEZ — Jake Brumfield was untouchable, the Adams County Christian School offense provided plenty of run support and Columbia Academy couldn’t get much going at all Tuesday night in a key MAIS District 5-AA matchup.
Brumfield allowed just one hit in five innings, while an 11-run first inning proved to be all that was needed in the Rebels’ 11-0 win.
Even with the early-inning outburst, ACCS head coach Hunter McKeivier said his team would have to be able to score in more than one inning going forward.
“I was pretty excited with the way we came out in the first inning and the way we were able to establish our bats,” McKeivier said.
“After that, I think we kind of put cruise control on those last three innings and were only able to get two hits. Even if we’re up 11-0, we have to continue the game, because you never know what might happen throughout.”
Brumfield, meanwhile, finished with nine strikeouts and was able to keep the ball down for the most part, tallying five groundouts to just one fly out. He said his fastball was his go-to pitch against the Cougar batters.
“For some reason, I couldn’t really spot up my slider,” Brumfield said. “It wasn’t breaking for me. My curveball was working good, but I was just spotting my fastball well.”
McKeivier may have said it before, but he said again Tuesday night that he felt Brumfield was one of the best pitchers in the state.
“He’s showed it this year,” McKeivier said. “I think after this game it’s going to knock his ERA down to point-three something. The only loss he’s taken, he actually only gave up one earned run over five innings.
“He had another dominant performance tonight, and that’s come to be a natural thing for us on Tuesday nights, his start nights. It seems like everybody focuses in more when he’s on the mound. Now, we have to be able to do that with every pitcher we have.”
Brumfield also got things going offensively for the Rebels, smacking a three-run home run over the left field fence in the bottom of the first after Chris Carrell and Tanner Martin walked to set the table for him. Chris Perry made it 4-0 Rebels when he scored on a passed ball.
A fielding error on a Tyler Buckles bunt sent home three more Rebel runs later in the inning, and Buckles later scored on another fielding error. The second time through the lineup, Carrell and Martin came home on a Chris Perry double to make it 10-0. Tyler Brumfield rounded out the scoring, coming home on a fielder’s choice.
Cougars started Ryan Stringer took the loss, giving up 11 runs on five hits, five walks and one intentional walk. He had three strikeouts. The Cougars finished with four errors, while ACCS had only one.
ACCS (13-4-1) will face Columbia Academy again next Friday on the road.
