NATCHEZ — The mother of a manslaughter victim said she’s glad the Natchez man convicted of killing her son has been given five more years prison time for having and using a cell phone while incarcerated.

Jimmy Pruitt was convicted of using the contraband phone in prison in February. He was originally caught with the phone in May 2011 after prison officials were alerted to the fact that he was posting on social networking websites.

Pruitt was sentenced to 10 years with five years suspended for the charges last week. The sentence is to run consecutive to a previous manslaughter sentence.

The manslaughter case dates to Nov. 18, 2003, when Pruitt was reportedly playing with a pistol, pointing it at himself and others and pulling the trigger. Though the gun did not discharge when pointed at others, when Pruitt pointed it at Christopher Bourdin, the gun went off and Bourdin was shot, dying almost instantly.

The two men were reportedly friends.

Pruitt was sentenced to 15 years for the manslaughter, but eight of those years were suspended. He was later released on probation, but in 2010 Pruitt returned to prison after violating the terms of his release.

Bourdin’s mother, Karren Ewing she was pleased with the new sentence because it gave Pruitt more time in prison, and that he is no longer eligible to be a prison trusty and does not qualify for 30-for-30. Inmates in the 30-for-30 system receive credit for an additional 30 days for every 30 days they serve.

“This (sentence) proves what we always knew, that he can’t behave,” Ewing said. “My daughter says, ‘Mama is never going to rest with it,’ and Mama is never going to rest with this. It feels better to know he is not fixing to get out.”

“The fact that he will be serving the new sentence consecutive to what he is serving now is good.”

Pruitt was 19 at the time of the killing. Bourdin was 21.
