FERRIDAY — Services for Joseph Kirkland “Joe” Hazlip, 85, of Waterproof, who died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ferriday with the Rev. Louis Sklar officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until service time Sunday at the church.
Mr. Hazlip was born May 20, 1927. He lived his entire life in Waterproof, except for his tour of duty during World War II. He served in the Merchant Marines. He was on the 1943 Waterproof High School State Championship football team and lettered as a freshman for Louisiana Tech University.
Joe worked for Chevron for 25 years. He and his wife owned Hazlip Oil Company before retiring in 1989. He served as alderman for the town of Waterproof.
Joe loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed watching them participate in sporting events. He shared with them his love of deer hunting. His trophy deer, Daniel, holds the Buckmasters whitetail record for crossbow hunting.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Betty Hays Hazlip; five children, Peter Kirkland Hazlip and wife, Marian, Joseph Magruder Hazlip and wife, Meg, Mary Rebecca Rabb and husband, Mike, Emile Patout Hazlip and wife, Adele, and Betty Jo Harris and husband, Todd; 13 grandchildren, Paige Sears and husband, Calvin, Stacey Staten and husband, Lucas, Bennett Hazlip and wife, Liz, Magruder Hazlip and wife, Liz, Corinne Hegwood and husband, Les, Rebecca Harrison and husband, Stan, Michael Rabb and wife, Lauren, Emily Hazlip, Stan Hazlip, Ned Wright and wife, Holly, Peter Wright, Davis Harris and Joseph Harris; 14 great-grandchildren, Benjamin Rice, Hannah Rice, Jackson Staten, Alexis Staten, Joe Hazlip, Ilana Hazlip, Mac Hazlip, Mae Hazlip, John Hazlip, Hays Hegwood, Gus Hegwood, Hunter Harrison, Bruin Harrison and Kenner Harrison.
Joe was known as “Papa” to his family.
Pallbearers will be Bennett Hazlip, Magruder Hazlip, Michael Rabb, Ned Wright, Stan Hazlip, Davis Harris, Joseph Harris and Peter Wright.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tensas Academy.
