Editor’s note: This is the 13th in a multi-part series highlighting the needs of area non-profit agencies during the holiday season.

NATCHEZ — From magazine subscriptions to a rocking chair and tablecloths, the Natchez Children’s Home Christmas wish list is full of a variety of items to make the home’s Christmas complete.

Since 1816, the home has cared for abused and neglected children.

The center no longer houses long-term institutional stays as it once did because of a national movement that prefers foster care to group home situations.

Instead the children’s home runs its ABC Learning Center for preschoolers, an after-school program for first, second and third graders, a counseling center and a child advocacy center.

Executive Director Nancy Hungerford said the children’s home serves 50 children.

Hungerford said this year the home is looking for magazine subscriptions for the children to National Geographic Magazine, Highlights, Sports Illustrated Kids and more.

The home is also in need of a sturdy rocking chair, tablecloths, flower centerpieces, a leaf blower and a weed trimmer.

Hungerford said gift cards to Office Depot, Walmart, Stine and other stores would be appreciated. She said the home uses those donations to purchase cleaning, office and other supplies.

Just as important as all those things, Hungerford said, is regular monthly donations to the home.

“Christmas is wonderful, but there are 11 more months that I need help,” she said.

Small amounts, such as $25 a month to join the home’s Children’s Club, make a big difference, Hungerford said.

Monetary donations can be mailed to the Natchez Children’s Home at P.O. Box 2028, Natchez, MS, 39121 or made online at ntzchs.org.

Other donations can be dropped off at the home at 815 N. Union St. Hungerford can be reached at the home at 601-442-6858.
