NATCHEZ — Police are searching for the source of counterfeit money several local businesses reported receiving this week.
Natchez Police Detective Jerry Ford said Sears,Walmart, Southside Market, Fred’s Store and Magnolia Bluffs Casino all reported receiving counterfeit money at their businesses.
Ford said the counterfeiters have been taking small bills, such as a $5 bill, bleaching them and reprinting $100 bills on them.
“It’s able to check out with a counterfeit (detector) pen, so a lot of places are getting hit and aren’t finding out until later,” Ford said.
Ford said businesses should be on the lookout for counterfeit money and contact NPD if they suspect someone is trying to use counterfeit money at their business.
No arrests have been made yet, Ford said, but he said the police department does have a few people in custody for questioning about the counterfeit money.
Anyone with any information about the counterfeit money should call NPD at 601-445-5565 or Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
Callers can remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers offers up to a $1,000 for a tip leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect.
