NATCHEZ — Mackenzie Watts went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in as the Cathedral Lady Green Wave defeated the Franklin County Lady Bulldogs 8-1 Friday afternoon at the Cathedral softball field.

Cathedral scored at least one run in five of the six innings it went to bat. The Lady Green Wave jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After Franklin County’s Courtney Hauer hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, Cathedral answered with two runs in the bottom of the second and added a run in the bottom of the third, fourth and sixth innings.

“It was a well-played game. We actually had a couple of opportunities to blow them open, but we couldn’t get the hits when we needed them,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “That’s been our downfall the last couple of games.”

McKenzie Milligan went 2-for-3 with one RBI, Tori Edwards had a double and two RBIs, and Kimble Devening had a double for the Lady Green Wave.

Winning pitcher Mollie Devening went the distance and gave up just three hits and struck out nine batters. In fact, Hauer was the only player for the Lady Bulldogs to have any success against her as she went 3-for-3.

“We played a good game, defense and offense. I was real pleased with them,” Blackwell said. “Mollie has struggled a little bit the last couple of games, but she was back to her old self.”

Harley McKay took the loss after allowing eight runs, only two of them earned, on seven hits, two walks and two hit batters with no strikeouts.

Franklin County (4-12-1) next plays at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home against West Marion. Cathedral (10-6) has a road game next Monday at 6 p.m. against Bogue Chitto.
