Cathedral earns pair of comeback wins

NATCHEZ — The Cathedral Green Wave could have been called the comeback kids in its two wins Saturday afternoon at its summer tournament hosted at Chester Willis Field.
First, Cathedral scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a tie ball game en route to a 6-3 win over the Franklin County Bulldogs. Brett Brown went 2-for-2 and Pate Shirley had a double for the Green Wave. Benard Selmon had a triple for the Bulldogs.
In the final game of the day, the Green Wave rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to defeat the Copiah Academy Colonels 6-5 in another six-inning game despite having just one hit in the contest. Cathedral was aided by four Colonel errors. Gabe Smith was the winning pitcher, while Kade Clanton was charged with the loss.
Copiah Academy scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but Thomas Garrity shut the door on the Colonels in the final five innings. The Green Wave scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to get back in the game and used a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead.
In other action in the final day of the three-day tournament, Natchez High held on to defeat Adams County Christian School 10-9 and Franklin County responded from its loss by defeating Copiah Academy 16-6.
