NATCHEZ — Learn what it takes to get a novel published or hear stories about a remarkable French-Atlantic voyage this weekend in the Miss-Lou.
High temperatures are expected to remain in the 90s throughout the weekend, but plenty of indoor events offer shade from the hot summer sun.
The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians
Erin Greenwald, curator at the Historic New Orleans Collection, will present an illustrated program regarding a memoir written by a 21-year-old French adventurer who ventured to New Orleans nearly 300 years ago.
Greenwald edited and wrote an introduction for the memoir, which is titled, “A Company Man: The Remarkable French-Atlantic Voyage of a Clerk for the Company of the Indies.”
Grand Village Director Jim Barnett said the memoir, which was originally written by Marc-Antoine Caillot, mentions Caillot’s interactions with survivors of the Natchez Massacre. The massacre that occurred on Nov. 29, 1729, killed more than 240 people.
“He was able to talk with the survivors of that attack as they arrived in New Orleans,” Barnett said. “It’s just a very interesting memoir that was lost to the world for a great number of years.”
The presentation will take place at 6:30 p.m. today in the Grand Village auditorium.
The Markets Food Show and Miss-Lou Outdoors Expo
Whether you’re hungry or looking for some hunting gear, one Miss-Lou event should everything you need this weekend.
The Markets Food Show and the Miss-Lou Outdoors Expo will be under one roof at the Natchez Convention Center Saturday and Sunday.
The event will feature tastings and samples of everything from etouffee and jambalaya to cookies and ice cream, as well as a few new foods available at the Markets.
Show promoter Jerry D’Eramo said the food show and outdoors expo should have something for everyone. The expo will feature fishing, hunting and camping equipment, clothing, tractors, ATVs, deer stands, as well as a “mini-store” set up by Sports Center.
The show and expo will be from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is $5, and children under 8 get in free. Two-for-one tickets are available with a $25 purchase at any of the Markets’ locations.
The event will also include a drawing for $2,500 in groceries from the Markets.
Armstrong Library presents, “Getting your book published!”
Natchez native Ashton Lee will share proven methods for getting material seen and considered by established publishers at 5 p.m. today at the Judge George W. Armstrong Library on South Commerce Street.
Assistant library director Anne White said several library patrons approached her requesting material on how to go about getting work published.
“I thought we would do that focus because so many people were asking about it,” White said. “And we’re not talking about self publishing here, we’re talking about big New York publishing agencies.
“Ashton is a native son and someone we’re always glad to have in our library.”
Lee majored in English at Sewanee and currently lives in Oxford. His most recent book, “The Cherry Cola Book Club,” details a young Mississippi librarian’s struggle to keep her library open.
NASD Common Core State Standards community meeting
The Natchez-Adams School District will host its second informational community meetings at 9 a.m. Saturday to discuss upcoming statewide changes to Mississippi curriculum.
Mississippi adopted the Common Core State Standards, which are a set of nationally adopted standards, in 2010 with the goal of having them fully implemented in kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and math by the 2013-2014 school year.
The new standards are expected to be more rigorous and provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn.
District officials will discuss what students need to know and what will be expected of students in the upcoming school year.
The meeting will take place at Christian Hope Baptist Church, which is located at 301 Lasalle St.
