TALLULAH, La. — Marty Lewis pitched three and two-thirds strong innings of relief and Tali Beard went 2-for-3 with a double as the Trinity Episcopal Lady Saints rallied to defeat the Tallulah Academy Lady Trojans 6-5 Thursday afternoon in MAIS District 7-A action.
Lewis came in for starting pitcher Kailey Hutchins, who gave up four unearned runs on two hits and two walks to go with two strikeouts in two and one-third innings. All of the runs Hutchins allowed came in the bottom of the third inning.
And that was after Hutchins didn’t allow a single run in each of the first two innings and Trinity took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Lewis allowed one run, none earned, on two hits and two walks and she struck out five batters.
After both teams scored one run in the fifth inning, the Lady Saints used a three-run rally in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Lewis then shut down the Lady Trojans in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the win.
Lewis helped her own cause by going 2-for-3 at the plate. Both Beard and Lewis had two stolen bases.
Trinity Episcopal (5-4, 2-0) has three games Saturday at the Silliman Tournament, first at 9 a.m. against Silliman, then at 10:30 a.m. against Central Private and finally at 1:30 p.m. against Marshall Academy.
