Early voting nears for congressional race

VIDALIA — Early voting for the Nov. 16 5th Congressional District runoff begins Saturday.

The race is between two Republican candidates, businessman Vance McAllister of Monroe and State District 32 Sen. Neil Riser of Columbia.

Early votes can be cast at the parish registrar of voters’ office in the Concordia Parish courthouse between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Early voting will continue Monday through Nov. 9.

McAllister and Riser were the top vote getters in a primary field of 14 candidates. Riser received 32 percent of the ballot, while McAllister received 18 percent.

The race is to fill the unexpired term of former Rep. Rodney Alexander, R—Ruston, who resigned in September to take the helm at the state Department of Veterans Affairs. The term will expire Jan. 3, 2015.
