Surget Shields Sanders

FOREST PARK, Ala. — Memorial service for Surget Shields Sanders, 65, who died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at her residence on Red Mountain in Forest Park, Ala. will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at her residence.
A reception will follow.
Mrs. Sanders was the daughter of Paula Massey and James Surget Shields Jr., a prominent attorney.
Surget earned earned a BA and MA in French from the University of South Carolina. She was member of Chi Omega Sorority. She lived and traveled widely in France, England and Europe. She once rode The Chunnel to London before taking trips to Edinburgh and the environs.
A born leader, Surget held executive spots at Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina, Computer Science Corporation, NCP Solutions and others. She also created a website devoted to historic Natchez families.
Mrs. Sanders served on the board of Friends of Avondale Park. She also was a member of the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Forest Park Garden Club, Greater Birmingham Humane Society, The Club, Birmingham Zoo, Birmingham Botanical Gardens and Daughters of the American Revolution.
She loved nature, fine dining, cooking at home, cats and dogs, especially red dachshunds.
Survivors include her husband, Lucius Carl Sanders Jr. of Birmingham; cousins, Betty McGehee, of Natchez, Laura Massey Bearden and DeDe Bearden, of Nashville, Tenn., Tucker Shields, of Stanton, Va., Dr. Bayard Tynes, of Birmingham, Ala.;and a number of other relatives and friends.
Donations in Surget’s memory may be made to the Greater Birmingham Humane Society.
