Let’s make a tricentennial fuss this year

Today marks the beginning of the 298th year since early French settlers first established an outpost on the Natchez bluffs.

That means only two years remain before Natchez’s Tricentennial celebration kicks off in 2016.

Much work has already gone into the 300th birthday party for Natchez, but more work remains.

While tourism officials and a small army of volunteers are working hard to pack the local hotels and bed and breakfasts with visitors throughout the year, the beginning of a new year is also a great time to remember the role all of us can play in making the Natchez Tricentennial even better.

Our role is simple — talk it up.

The absolute best kind of marketing is word of mouth marketing. When someone you know and trust tells you something, you generally believe it.

That’s why everyone in Natchez — a city that we know is connected to people all around the world — should make talking up the Natchez Tricentennial a New Year’s resolution for this year.

The bigger the event is, the better it will be for Natchez’s economy. More visitors coming to Natchez means more tourism taxes pouring into the area.

That’s certainly worth talking up, isn’t it?
