CHS grad leading Wolfpack tennis team

WESSON — Freshman Dwain Perkins of Natchez came back to win the tie-breaker at No. 1 singles to give the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolfpack a 5-4 win over the Northwest Rangers in tennis action Friday.

The Cathedral High School graduate took the first set 7-6 and dropped the second set to Joseph Shidler 6-1. He won the tie-breaker (10-5) in the deciding match.

Perkins won several awards and tournaments in his prep career at Cathedral High School, including a District 7 championship in the singles category and the state championship in the doubles division in 2011.

In other single’s action, Co-Lin’s Brock Smith fell to Max Stanford 6-2, 6-2 at  No. 2. Northwest’s Christian Scott defeated Co-Lin’s Graham Watson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. Brandon Nettles defeated Northwest’s Tyler Newman 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. In another hotly contested match, Co-Lin’s Coleman Carraway outlasted Jan Morgan Bell 5-7, 6-1 (10-7) at No. 5. Northwest’s Michael Moss defeated Josh Smith 6-1, 6-3 at #6.

The Rangers picked up one win at No. 2 doubles as Stanford/Bell defeated Brock Smith/Josh Smith 8-2 at No. 2. The Wolfpack duo of Perkins/Watson defeated Shidler/Scott 8-6 at No. 1 and Nettles/Carraway defeated Chip Malone/Moss 8-1 at No. 3.

Co-Lin will host Hinds at 3 p.m. today.
