NATCHEZ — An Adams County Christian School graduate died in a fatal collision Sunday evening at the intersection of U.S. 61 South and Kingston Road.

Tyler Brumfield, 20, of Natchez was killed during a two-vehicle wreck that left others injured, Adams County coroner James Lee confirmed Sunday night.

“Whenever there is a fatality, it is a severe accident, but this one happened to be closer to home for me because I knew the kid,” Lee said. “I feel like this kid was one of my own because I watched him play a lot of baseball at ACCS.

“It’s just a very traumatic feeling and a very traumatic accident.”

Following the collision, one vehicle was in the embankment and another in the middle of the road at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday as multiple law enforcement agencies and medical personnel responded to the scene.

Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop M Sgt. Rusty Boyd said Brumfield, driving a 2011 Nissan Sentra, was south bound on U.S. 61 when he attempted to make a left turn onto Kingston Road.

“As he crossed the north bound lanes of traffic, the front right of his vehicle collided with the left front of the Avalon,” Boyd said in a press release.

The 2007 Toyota Avalon was driven by Paula R. Campesi, 50, of Monroe, La. Campesi was heading north bound on U.S. 61.

Boyd said a front seat passenger in the Sentra, April N. Worthey, 20, of Natchez was airlifted to Rapides Regional Medical Center in Alexandria with severe injuries.

“Worthey was not wearing (a seatbelt) during the collision and was partially ejected,” Boyd said. “Campesi was wearing (a seatbelt) and was transported by ambulance to Natchez Regional Medical Center with major injuries.”

A front seat passenger in the Avalon, David Hayes, of 2004 Old St. in Monroe, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, Boyd said, and was taken to Natchez Regional with minor injuries.

A back seat passenger in the Avalon, Gloria Browning, 72, of Ruston, La., was wearing a seatbelt and was airlifted to Rapides Regional with severe injuries.

“The cause of the collision is still under investigation,” Boyd said.
