BEN HILLYER / THE NATCHEZ DEMOCRAT – Vidalia High School’s Cassie Gonzales gets back to second base before Caldwell Parish’s Presley Hendrix can field the ball. Gonzales advanced to third base on the wild throw.

VIDALIA— After losing 6-3 to Caldwell Parish Monday and committing five errors in the loss, Vidalia High School head softball coach Gary Paul Parnham wants his team to go for it.

Lady Vikings’ ace Taylor Rodgers pitched seven innings and struck out seven, but routine plays gone wrong cost Vidalia the victory.

“Taylor pitched a heck of a ballgame, pitched a ballgame well enough to win,” Parnham said. “When you make errors like that behind her, you can’t win that way. It’s too tough a district.”

Rodgers led Vidalia in hitting, going 2-for-4 and recording an RBI. Cassie Gonzalez was the only other Lady Viking to record a hit.

Caldwell’s Lyndsey Evans gave up just three hits and struck out nine over seven innings. Despite Vidalia’s struggles at the plate, Parnham was more concerned about his team’s fielding.

“It’s almost like we’re playing to not make the error instead of playing ball,” Parnham said. “Make the plays you’ve been making your whole life. We’re hesitant because we don’t want to make the error and that’s when you get in trouble.”

With the loss, Vidalia falls to 2-4 on the season, but the Lady Vikings don’t have to wait long to wash the bad taste out of their mouths. With a 4 p.m. contest at Monterey today, Parnham would like to see his team’s fielding woes reduced and improved upon.

“We have to make the routine plays,” Parnham said. “The team that makes the routine plays wins the ballgames, and that’s what we’re not doing. We’re making errors on routine groundballs and fly-balls.”
