NATCHEZ — Local Special Olympics competitors captured the gold in various events this week in New York.
Chandler Warren and Jason Smith took the gold in the men’s Bocce double. Warren and Team Mississippi won the gold in male bocce, and Sadie Saunders and Team Mississippi took home the gold in the female bocce. LaQuanda Cooks seized the gold in the 100-meter walk, while Dianna Turner captured the gold in the softball throw.
Win or lose, though, Area Director for District 7 Tommie Jones said each participant has had a blast.
“You just wouldn’t believe how much fun they’re having,” Jones said. “They went on a cruise last night and saw the Statue of Liberty. They’re being treated like royalty out here.”
Saunders and Lisa Dawson won the bronze medal in female bocce, and Sanders placed in fourth in the singles bocce.
Dustin Floyd finished third in the 100 meters.
