Rebels win in dramatic walkoff fashion

NATCHEZ — The Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels softball team found itself playing catch up all night against Centreville Academy, but Bailey Boyd’s walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed the Lady Rebels’ third win against Centreville in the past week.

ACCS (6-1) beat Centreville 6-5 Thursday night, which didn’t seem likely after they trailed 3-0 early in the top of the third inning.

“Early in the ball game, we had runners on second and third and just couldn’t get base hits when we needed,” ACCS head softball coach Forrest Foster said.

But the Lady Rebels finally got their bats to come alive in the bottom of the third when Breanna Henson hit a double as the first batter of the inning.

Lexie Emmanuel followed with a double immediately after, and allowed Henson to score, putting ACCS on the scoreboard 3-1.

Jordan Petty hit a single that brought in Emmanuel, and then slid home two plays later on a fielder’s choice to tie the game 3-3.

Centreville got their lead back in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 5-3, and ACCS had their chance to tie the game or possibly take the lead when Petty stepped to the plate with the bases loaded.

But Petty couldn’t connect as she struck out.

Though that seemed to be a momentum shifter for the Lady Rebels, Petty would be the one in the bottom of the sixth inning with ACCS down 5-4 to pick the tempo back up.

Petty hit hard to the fence and made it to second base for a double, which allowed Emmanuel to score and tie the game at 5-5.

“Petty’s double was huge for us, and I thought it was going over the fence,” Foster said. “We (began to) hit the ball extremely well and that was the difference in the ball game. They saw that if we wait on waistline pitches, we could hit the ball hard.”

Brooke Allen stepped to the plate next with two outs and Petty on third to potentially win the game, and though she connected on a line drive straight for the pitcher’s mound, closing pitcher McKenzie Tarver quickly put her glove out in front of her head to get the final out of the inning.

But the Lady Rebels still had the momentum.

They played solid defense in the top of the seventh inning with three straight outs, and had another chance to win the game with two outs when Boyd came to bat.

The overanxious Boyd quickly tallied two strikes, and Foster calmed her down before sending her back to the plate.

“A lot of times kids get two strikes and they tend to tense up and I told her anything close to the (strike zone), you have to put it into play,” Foster said. “I have all the confidence in the world in her, and she came up big. We expect it out of her.”

Boyd, Petty and Henson all hit doubles and went 2-for-4 from the plate. Brooke Runnels tallied nine strikeouts for ACCS.

The Lady Rebels play Silliman Institute at 7 p.m. Monday.
