Cathedral QB battle enters Jamboree

NATCHEZ — With no end in sight, Cathedral’s quarterback battle may continue through the start of the season, adding more appeal to Friday’s jamboree.
Cathedral will host Wilkinson County Christian Academy at 7 p.m. Friday night at Devereaux Stadium, where the Green Wave and Rams will play two regulation quarters. If you’re wondering who will make the start at quarterback for the Green Wave, you’ll have to wait until Friday to see for yourself.
“It’s all up in the air,” said head coach Ron Rushing when deciding on which of his four quarterbacks will play. “I probably won’t decide until Thursday. (Alex) Weadock and (Wyatt) Boothe will get in there for sure. All of them offer something different, so we’ll give all four an opportunity.”
Boothe, Weadock, Andrew Beesley and Connor Mire have been battling all summer to fill the void graduating senior Thomas Garrity left at the position.
As for the game plan against WCCA, Rushing is more worried about putting his players in a position to react. He’s already installing offensive and defensive concepts that he’ll focus on in the first game against St. Aloysius, so he’s using the jamboree encounter against WCCA as a tune up.
“We’re not going to blitz, and we’re just going to utilize a base defense,” Rushing said. “I want to see technique. I want to see players get up the field and see if they’re fundamentally sound.”
Rushing said his ideal scenario Friday night would be to get every player competing for starting jobs, but he understands that will be a tall task with only two quarters to work with.
“We’re still going to play a lot of people,” Rushing said. “We just want to see them read and react.”
