VIDALIA — Two West Monroe residents were arrested Saturday after leaving an infant unsupervised on the hood of their car at the Vidalia Riverfront while they fished in the Mississippi River.
Vidalia Police Department officers responded to a call of an infant being left unsupervised near the boat ramp on the riverfront at approximately 11:23 a.m. Saturday, Police Chief Arthur Lewis said.
The officers found a two-week-old infant unsupervised in a carrier in the open sun without any shade or covering sitting on top of a car, Lewis said.
The child’s parents — Marcella Cooper Watson, 32, and David Lee Ramey, 33, both of West Monroe — were found fishing on the riverbank just below where their car was parked.
The infant was transported by ambulance to Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday to be checked for sunburn and dehydration.
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services was contacted and took custody of the infant.
Watson and Ramey were arrested and charged with cruelty to a juvenile and improper supervision of a juvenile.
Judge Leo Boothe set bonds for the parents at $5,500 this morning.
