NATCHEZ — The ACCS Lady Rebels had everything working in a 9-2 victory against Tensas Academy Tuesday night.

The Lady Rebels accounted for 13 hits, and Brooke Runnels limited Tensas Academy to two hits in the win, but it was a lucky bounce that allowed ACCS to regain momentum in a tight contest early. Following a 2-RBI double by Tensas’ Hannah Jones, the Rebels led 3-2 going into the bottom of the third. On a bizarre play, pitcher Bailey Keyes lost her grip on the softball in her windup, causing the ball to go behind her and allowing ACCS to extend its lead to two. The Rebels never looked back after that.

Athletic director Rick Fife stepped in to coach for the Lady Rebels, and said believe it or not, that’s not the first time he’s seen such a play.

“It’s not very often you see that,” said Fife, who asked his team to be more patient at the plate between the second and third inning. “Our patience and aggressiveness after that manufactured some runs.”

Before ACCS adjusted its approach at the plate, Fife thought his team was swinging at balls and not taking advantage of opportunities. The Rebels executed in situational hitting after Fife’s pep talk, producing scores. The Rebels were particularly affective on squeeze plays by Harley Morton and Anna McDaniel, scoring the runner on third base.

ACCS’ Morton, Lexi Emanuel and Ashleigh Williams each recorded extra base hits in the game, as well.

Meanwhile, Jordan Petty showcased superb defense at third base, snagging lined shots down the third base line and robbing Tensas’ hitters of any hits.

Runnels struck out four Tensas batters on her way to earning the win. Fife said Runnels has elevated her game in recent weeks.

“Brook has performed real well in the last couple of weeks, and I hope she can continue to play at that level,” Fife said.

Following the win, ACCS will return to the diamond next Tuesday at home against WCCA.
