NATCHEZ — A funeral mass for Frederick Axel “Mr. Freddie” Voss, 80, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, will be at noon today at St. Mary Basilica.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time todayat the church.
Mr. Voss was born June 17, 1934, in Natchez, the son of Axel Voss of Copenhagen, Denmark and Delphine Hicks Voss of Natchez.
He was a 1953 graduate of Cathedral High School and served three years of active duty in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Massey.
He was co-owner of A-B Motor Company with his brother, Carl Voss, until their retirement in 2005. A lifetime active member of St. Mary Basilica, he served a number of years as an usher.
Freddie was a charter member of Boy Scout Troop 158, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and was the troop’s first Eagle Scout. He has served as active Scoutmaster of this troop from September 1971 until the time of his death. As a member and leader, Freddie made 10 trips to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Under his leadership, 82 young men earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Freddie received the Natchez Trace District Award of Merit and the honor of Silver Beaver. He was also named Unsung Hero by the Natchez Trace District of Boy Scouts in 2008; the St. George Emblem for recognition of service to Catholic youth in the program of Boy Scouts of America in 2011; and the Miss-Lou Chapter of the National Football Foundation Distinguished American Award in 2011.
As an active member of Knights of Columbus Council 1034, Freddie served two terms as Grand Knight and was Faithful Navigator of Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He has been recognized as Knight of the Month and Family of the Year.
Mr. Voss was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth Catherine “Libby” Voss; and two brothers-in-law, Robert Eugene “Bob” Clements and William Ray “Bill” Clements, both of Birmingham, Ala.
Survivors include his wife, Pat; one son, Van Voss and wife, Jennifer, of Natchez; one daughter, Lori Voss Olinde and husband, Brian, of Ventress, La.; six grandchildren, Nolan Christian Voss, Justin “Buddy” Livingston, Hunter Ramsey Voss, all of Natchez, William Rossie Olinde, Lawson Elizabeth Olinde and Bennett Axel Olinde, all of Ventress; four brothers, Carl Voss and wife, Glenda of Natchez, Bobby Voss and wife, Barbara, of New Orleans and Bill Voss and wife, Jean, of McComb and Philip Voss and wife, Nancy, of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters-in-law, Judy Clements of Baton Rouge, Trudy Clements and Kay Clements, both of Birmingham; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be six of Mr. Freddie’s Eagle Scouts, Biff Partridge, Brian Maier, David Rogillio, Scott Rogillio, Steve Brown and John Hicks III.
Honorary pallbearers will be assistant Scoutmasters, Stacy McKay, Mark Miller, Paul Maier , Finley Hootsell and current and past members of Boy Scout Troop 158.
