AMITE, La. — Oak Forest Academy senior quarterback Tyler Hasson had three total touchdowns – two rushing and one on special teams – to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 33-0 win over the Wilkinson County Christian Academy Rams Friday night.
For the second straight week, WCCA fumbled the ball on the first play from scrimmage and Oak Forest took advantage. On the Yellow Jackets’ first play from scrimmage, Hasson scored on a 25-yard run and Collin Kent added the extra point to give them a 7-0 lead just 55 seconds into the ball game.
“We had to play an error-free game. It took us a little bit to get going and figuring out what we’re made of,” WCCA head coach Kyle White said.
Hasson scored his second touchdown of the game on a 7-yard run and Kent’s point after made it 14-0 in favor of Oak Forest with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter. Kent then had a 1-yard touchdown run with 1:59 left in the opening quarter, but he missed the extra point for a 20-0 Yellow Jackets advantage.
“We didn’t tackle all that well in the first two or three possessions,” White said. “They executed well. They’re a well-coached team. They’re very balanced. They seem to enjoy putting helmets on the ball.”
Jeb Malley had the longest offensive score of the game with his 61-yard touchdown run with 5:20 left in the second quarter and Kent’s PAT gave Oak Forest a commanding 27-0 lead.
Hasson caught a WCCA punt at the Oak Forest 3-yard line. But he didn’t call for a fair catch and the Rams had a golden opportunity to pin them deep in their own territory. Instead, Hasson eluded would-be tackler after would-be tackler and the result was a 97-yard return for a touchdown and a 33-0 lead with 3:18 to go until halftime.
Even though the Rams were not able to put any points against a tough Oak Forest defense, their defense kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard in the second half.
“I don’t know what they did at halftime, but in the second half, the defense played well. They were flying to the ball,” White said.
Rodney Boyd led WCCA’s defense with 11 tackles. Mason Contine had eight tackles and one fumble recovery. Sam Nicholas also had a fumble recovery.
The Rams’ offense was limited to 115 total yards and six first downs while turning the ball over three times. Caleb Poole was the team’s leading rusher with 45 yards on seven carries and Boyd had eight carries for 29 yards.
Hutch Holden got his first start at quarterback and completed six of 11 passes for 47 yards with two interceptions. Hayden Patterson had three catches for 45 yards.
“We had some younger kids step up. It was good to see,” White said. “They’re starting to figure out who they are and they’re starting to find an identity.”
WCCA (0-4) takes on Porter’s Chapel Academy next Friday with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
