LIBERTY — It was an up-and-down day for the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels, and it was not a good day at all for the Centreville Academy Lady Tigers Saturday at the MAIS Class AA South State Tournament at Vance Park.
In the end, both teams were eliminated to teams they both know quite well. And if that wasn’t enough, both ACCS and Centreville had their postseasons end to teams that finished in third place in their respected districts.
The Lady Rebels went 1-2 in the tournament while the Lady Tigers were two and done.
ACCS, which came in second place in District 5-AA, got off to a rough start as it lost to District 4-AA champion Park Place Christian Academy 10-0 in five innings. Breley Bowkin pitched a one-hitter and Karley Bailey hit a grand slam home run as part of a five-run bottom of the third inning.
“In the first game, I thought we just got out-hit. The grand slam in the third inning put it out of reach,” Lady Rebels head coach Rick Fife said. “We couldn’t scratch a run.”
That dropped them to the losers’ bracket, but the Lady Rebels were not ready to go down just yet as they defeated the Wayne Academy Lady Jaguars 3-1. Brooke Runnels, who pitched all three games for ACCS, limited Wayne Academy to just four hits and did not give up a run until the top of the seventh inning.
The Lady Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and one in the bottom of the fourth. Skylar Adams led was the only multiple hitter for either team as she went 2-for-3.
“The second game, we had a few more hits (seven to be exact). Skylar had two big hits in the game. Brooke pitched a real good game and we played good defense,” Fife said.
Unfortunately, ACCS’s season ended with a 7-5 loss to the Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars, who were third in District 5-AA. Brookhaven Academy finished with 14 hits while ACCS only managed five hits.
“The Brookhaven game, he had a 5-4 lead after four innings and they scored three in the (top of) the fifth,” Fife said. “Once again, I thought Brooke pitched a good game. We played solid defense, but they put the ball in play. We couldn’t get the timely hits. But I’m proud of the way the girls performed this season.”
ACCS finished with an overall record of 14-14.
Centreville Academy let a 2-1 lead slip through its fingers after committing five errors during Simpson Academy’s seven-run rally in the top of the third inning as the Lady Cougars defeated the Lady Tigers 9-4.
“We couldn’t get runners in scoring position. Defensively, nobody stepped up and put the fire out,” Lady Tigers head coach Mark Mann said. “We hit the ball well. We just didn’t have the timely hitting. Defense let us down in that one inning.”
That loss put Centreville in the losers’ bracket and it did not stay there very long. The Lady Tigers were eliminated by Bowling Green School, which was third in District 6-AA, after the Lady Buccaneers came away with a 5-1 win.
The Lady Tigers out-hit the Lady Buccaneers nine to seven, but they could not get the timely hits when they needed them. Tarver, Katelyn Bell and Macie Miley each had a double while Martiann Longmire was 2-for-3 and Sydnie Lyons was 2-for-4.
Centreville Academy ended up with an overall record of 8-19.
