NATCHEZ — Funeral services for Vera D. Callon, 94, of Natchez, who died Wednesday December 3, 2014, at Natchez Community Hospital, will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time at the church.
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Callon was born April 9, 1920 in Avera, Mississippi, the daughter of the Rev. Henry Lindsey Daniels and Jo Ollie Waldrop Daniels.
As a Methodist minister’s daughter, she moved often as she was growing up and attended schools in Biloxi, Long Beach, Edwards, Mc Comb, and finished high school at Copiah-Lincoln High School in Wesson, Mississippi.
She then attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in Wesson for two years where she served as homecoming queen. She completed her junior and senior years at Millsaps College, graduating in 1941 with a degree in psychology and elementary education. She later served on the Board of Trustees of the college.
Her first job was teaching second and third grades from 1941 to1942 in Washington, Miss. where she met Sim Callon at Christmas in 1941. She later taught in Tylertown and in Natchez. She and Sim were married on March 12, 1944.
Vera served on the Board of the Natchez Children’s Home and the Natchez City Cemetery Association Board and was active in many other organizations including the Pilgrimage Garden Club. She was a devout Christian and attended Jefferson Street Methodist Church and First Presbyterian Church. Over the years Vera enjoyed playing the piano, all types of needlework and afternoon tea time with family and friends.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents and husband Sim Chase Callon.
Survivors include two sons, Sim Chase Callon Jr. and wife, Lori, and Fred L. Callon and wife, Karen, all of Natchez; six grandchildren, Lynette Callon Bubrig and husband, Darryl, of Hammond, La.; Amy Callon Jones and husband Brant of Monroe, La., Heather B. Callon of Jackson, Ms., Lindsey H. Callon and wife Katherine of Natchez, Lauren W. Callon of Dallas, Tx. and LeeAnna Callon of New Orleans, La., Sarah Snyder of Natchez; Five great grandchildren, Kennedy and Brady Bubrig of Hammond, La., Evie Chase Jones of Monroe, La. and Harrison and Elizabeth Callon of Natchez; one cousin, Naomi Webb of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Dan Bland, Darryl Bubrig, Cane Callon, Lindsey Callon, Richard Green and Rudy Pollan. Honorary pallbearers will be Brent Bourland, Chase Callon, Bob Lehman, Ron Miller, Ron Riches and Marion Smith.
The family extends a special thanks to her devoted caregivers Flora Burns, Rita O’Neal, Patsy Gaines, Terrion Wilson, Linda Ross and Mattie Arbuthnot and Dr. Kenneth Stubbs.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church.
