NATCHEZ — Brandon Brooks scored 15 points and Lester Wells had 10 points as the Adams County Christian School Rebels defeated the Brookhaven Academy Cougars 54-34 Tuesday night to remain undefeated in MAIS District 5-AA.
After a back-and-forth yet low-scoring first quarter ended in a 12-12 tie, ACCS ramped up the defensive pressure a few notches and that allowed the Rebels to pull away from the upset-minded Cougars.
“They fought back. We knew they were going to give us their best and I knew we had to play well, which I thought we did,” Rebels head coach Richy Spears said. “We just wanted to make it as hard as possible for them.”
And that started in the second quarter when ACCS put up 13 points while holding Brookhaven Academy to just four points to go into halftime with a 25-16 advantage. The Rebels then outscored the Cougars 15-8 in the third quarter for a 40-24 lead and 14-10 in the fourth quarter.
“We held them to 34 points. That was a great defensive effort. We tried to make it as hard as possible,” Spears said. “We were running a lot of different defenses and gave them different looks.”
Not only was defense a pivotal factor, so once again was a balanced scoring attack for ACCS. Tyler Stockstill and Trey Fleming each contributed with nine points.
Payton Hood led Brookhaven Academy with a game-high 17 points and Caleb Brown finished with 12 points.
ACCS (17-2, 6-0) plays host to Central Hinds Academy Thursday night in another key district game.
Cathedral 58, Bogue Chitto 55
BOGUE CHITTO — Wyatt Boothe led Cathedral with 17 points and 11 rebounds and his three-point play late in the game helped the Green Wave defeat the Bogue Chitto Bobcats 58-55 Tuesday night in an MHSAA Division 7-1A game.
R.J. Givens added 14 points while both Alex Weadock and Jacob Hamilton had eight points for Cathedral, which trailed Bogue Chitto in the closing minutes before rallying to take the lead.
“They took a two-point lead with two and a half minutes to go. We got the lead back and held on for dear life after that,” Green Wave head coach Peter Arnold said.
The Green Wave led the Bobcats 15-13 after one quarter of play and 29-27 at halftime. Then it appeared that Cathedral was on its way to perhaps a double-digit win after it outscored Bogue Chitto 17-12 in the third quarter for a 46-39 lead. But the Bobcats fought back to regain the lead before Boothe came through in the clutch.
“Wyatt scored and got fouled and made the free throw on the and-one to put (us) up two. The team held on after that,” Arnold said.
James Allen Coley scored just two points for the Green Wave, but he also pulled down a team-high 17 rebounds. Bogue Chitto was led by Jeremiah Perkins with 22 points.
“It’s what I’ve been saying all along. We just need more games,” Arnold said. “We’re still not where we want to be, but to win on the road in the district was a good game.”
Cathedral (4-6, 3-1) next plays at St. Aloysius in a division match-up Friday night.
Ferriday 66, Oak Grove 42
OAK GROVE, La. — Kerri Brooks ended up with a game-high 14 points and Ronald Davis chipped in with 12 points to lead four Ferriday players in double figures as the Trojans rolled to a 66-42 win over the Oak Grove Tigers in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.
Shannon Morales and Dare Rosenthal had 11 points apiece for Ferriday, which jumped out to a 22-13 lead over Oak Grove and never looked back. A 19-8 advantage for the Trojans in the third quarter gave them a commanding 54-32 lead.
“What happened is that our guard play was good and we moved the ball decently,” Trojans head coach K.G. Watkins said. “We were able to make some steals and were able to get some turnovers.”
Ferriday (10-10, 3-1) continues its five-game road trip on Friday night when it plays at Jonesboro-Hodge.
Trinity Episcopal 60, Franklin Academy 45
WINNSBORO, La. — After getting off to a slow start offensively, the Trinity Episcopal Saints found their shooting rhythm in the second quarter as they defeated the Franklin Academy Cougars 60-45 Tuesday night in an MAIS District 6-A game.
Trinity Episcopal was only up 10-8 on Franklin Academy at the end of the first quarter. Then the Saints got their shots to fall in the second quarter and that resulted in an 18-12 advantage over the Cougars for a 28-20 halftime lead.
The third quarter saw the Saints turned up the pressure on defense as they limited the Cougars to just nine points while scoring 16 points themselves for a 44-29 lead.
Jakarius Caston and Demond Fleming led the Saints with 18 points each and Kevontaye Caston added 11 points.
Trinity Episcopal (6-6, 3-1) next plays at Tensas Academy Friday night.
Jefferson County 58, Hazlehurst 54
HAZLEHURST — Christian Day led all scorers with 26 points and Joshua Day finished with 11 points as the Jefferson County High School Tigers held on for a 58-54 win over the Hazlehurst High School Indians in an MHSAA Division 7-3A game Tuesday night.
Jefferson County did quite well in the first quarter on both ends of the court and had a 16-9 lead over Hazlehurst at the end of that quarter. However, the Indians would respond by outscoring the Tigers 16-12 in the second quarter and 17-14 in the third quarter to tie the game at 42-42.
But even with four players finishing in double figures, Hazlehurst did not make enough stops on defense when it mattered and was outscored by the Tigers 16-12 in the fourth quarter.
Jefferson County (N/A, 2-1) next plays on Friday night at Wilkinson County.
