NATCHEZ — Natchez High School soccer coach Dai Vu tried to make the best with what he had this past season, and after leading his team to a playoff birth, Vu believes he did just that.

Natchez High finished with a 5-2 record and boasted a 2-1 mark in district play. However, their playoff time was cut short after running into Pascagoula in the first round.

“We went and had to play one of the best teams in the state,” Vu said. “We just couldn’t make it to the next round. We ran out of gas.”

Vu and the Bulldogs fell 6-0 in the match, but the loss didn’t put a damper on the season.

Vu said he believes his team had potential this year, especially with the amount of speed they possessed.

“We could compare with every school in the area with speed,” he said. “But we needed more games and more practice with ball protection for kids just walking in and starting their first year of playing.”

While the team will be forced to revamp for next season, Vu’s hopes are still high.

“We are going to try and continue to get some good players,” he said. “I don’t know how the players will come out next year, but we will continue to play hard and practice hard.”

In an area that is dominated by football, basketball and baseball, Vu said he would like to see more students give soccer a chance.

“We don’t have a lot of programs for soccer around here,” Vu said. “I’ve tried to recruit player from the middle school who play in the youth league. They start in the youth league and go from there.”

Vu will also have to wait to get back with the Bulldogs, who will not have any type of practice until next season.
