NATCHEZ — Memorial services for Dr. Jimmy Ronald Roper Sr., DD Ph.D., 80, who died Monday, Feb. 23, 2015, at his residence surrounded by family, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Media Gate Studios.

Arrangements are under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Rev. Roper was born July 8, 1934, in Rome, Ga., the son of Samuel and Rita Roper. He was of Cherokee decent.

His mother’s prayers were answered in 1952, when he followed God’s calling and entered the ministry. He advanced the kingdom of God not only through fiery sermons spoken at revivals in tent meetings but also through pioneering churches from the sweat of his brow and the hammer in his hand. This began with various denominations such as the Church of God, Revival Temple Fellowship in San Diego, Calif., and culminated in establishing The Revivals of Deliverance in Portland, Ore.

Throughout his ministry, Rev. Roper authored 20 books, recorded a number of music albums, was named honorary ambassador to Guam and supported two ministries as a board member. He evangelized across America and over 50 countries around the world, spanning 64 years of ministry, bringing him to settle in Natchez.

Rev. Roper was often referred to as “The Walking Bible” and “The Weeping Prophet.” He rapidly quoted scriptures and ministered the word with precision and strength, often explaining the Greek or Hebrew origin, revealing deeper meaning to the text. His boldness and love for the lost compelled him to reach out and touch the lives of many, regardless of race, class, status or ethnicity. He always took the time to say a word of encouragement and inspire others to change.

Survivors include his loving wife, Joanne Roper; three sons, the Rev. Ron Roper and wife, Lilly, of Natchez, Michael Stolten and wife, Amanda, of New Orleans and Capt. Andrew Stolten, U.S. Air Force, Surprise, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Veronica and Joseph Roper of Natchez; one sister, Louise Paxson; one nephew, Jerry Ely and wife, Marcia; one great-nephew, Ches and wife, Maria; and great-niece, Hannah Decker and husband, Clint, all of Rome.

The family wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks to the hospice staff of Compassionate Care for all their help in his final weeks.
