NATCHEZ — A near hour-long 10-run inning for Amite School Center highlighted a 22-2 win against Trinity Episcopal Day School in the Saints’ season opener Saturday.

The Saints fell to Amite in doubleheader action, losing the second game 17-7.

In the 22-2 loss, the Saints committed eight errors, hit six Amite batters and walked seven, but because the team has only had three days of practice, Trinity head coach Elliot Meng was expecting the team to struggle with limited experience.

“Our infield is sloppy, we have to work so much on that,” Meng said. “It’s our weakest point, along with pitching and walks.”

One bright spot in the 20-run loss was Kevontaye Caston’s production at the plate. Caston went 2-for-2 with two singles and two steals. For the most part, with three hits generated in the ballgame, Meng was pleased with the way his Saints were swinging the bat.

“Our offense actually hit a lot better than I was expecting,” Meng said.

The Saints fell behind 6-0 in the first inning, when starting pitcher Jacob Netterville hit three of the first five batters he faced. Two errors and a walk loaded the bases for Kellan Martin to drive in a run before Dacotan McDaniel drilled a 2-RBI single, putting the sixth run of the inning on the board.

Trinity’s Cole Switzer replaced Netterville, who allowed six runs on one hit, in the second inning. Switzer pitched for one and two-thirds of an inning, allowing nine runs on four hits.

Trinity scored its first run of the game when Switzer drove in Netterville on an RBI single.

In the second game, Trinity put forth a better effort with Kevontaye on the mound. Trinity took a 3-2 lead in the second inning before Amite School Center scored seven in the bottom half of the inning, opening the door for a 17-7 victory.

Trinity’s Cade Wells went 2-for-3 in the second game with two singles.

The (0-2) Saints will next play at River Oaks High School at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
