Natchez needs more watch programs

Unfortunately, most of us live in a world in which getting involved in someone else’s business is not considered to be good manners.
Too often, we tend to see something that doesn’t look correct and just turn away, justifying it as, “Not my concern.”
Sadly, criminals have noticed those same tactics and have taken advantage of the apathetic attitude many of us have.
The result can be costly in both lives and property as criminals succeed while otherwise well-meaning residents turn the other way and ignore signs of trouble.
That problem has been worsened by our rushed culture in which neighbors often don’t know one another well.
That’s why Neighborhood Watch programs are so refreshing.
By bringing together neighbors and law enforcement officers, with a common goal — take back their neighborhoods — good things are occurring.
Crime appears to be down, neighbors and law enforcement officers say, but more important, neighbors are developing a sense of common ownership and pride that has become all too rare these days. A certain sense of accomplishment must also take hold as neighbors see the fruits of their collective works in cleaning up their neighborhoods.
We thank the volunteers who are making a difference in the various Neighborhood Watch programs and encourage others to either join in or create a program for their own neighborhoods.
