NATCHEZ — The Cathedral Lady Green Wave showed no mercy on the Mount Olive Lady Pirates in an MHSAA Division 7-1A varsity doubleheader Tuesday afternoon, taking Game 1 by a score of 17-0 and rolling to a 19-1 win in Game 2.

Both games needed just three innings to complete because of the mercy rule and both games featured no-hitters by Cathedral pitching – the first one of the solo variety and the second one a combined effort.

“They’re a young team. They just started their program last year. They’re building a program,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said of Mount Olive.

Elizabeth Smith threw the first no-no of the day and struck out eight batters while walking none. And she got all the run support she needed in the bottom of the first inning when Cathedral put up six runs.

However, the Lady Green Wave was not done yet as they racked up 11 more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Baylee Graning went 2-for-2 and a double and three runs scored while Abby Brown was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, and Marty Lewis went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored as Cathedral had 10 total hits.

And if that wasn’t enough, Mackenzie Watts, Emily Rasco and Caroline Kaiser combined to drive in seven runs with Watts also scoring three runs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Lewis and Rasco combined for a unique no-hitter. Lewis pitched the first two innings before Rasco came in to start the top of the third inning. Rasco did not give up a hit, but a couple of walks and passed balls allowed the Lady Pirates to score their only run of the game without getting a single out.

So Blackwell put Lewis back in the game and she closed the door on Mount Olive. Lewis ended up going three innings and struck out eight with no walks.

“Elizabeth and Marty were both hitting their spots. They were throwing strikes,” Blackwell said.

Cathedral scored an astonishing 14 runs in the bottom of the first inning and added five runs in the bottom of the second. Watts went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored, Smith went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, one RBI and three runs scored, and Graning was 2-or-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. As a team, the Lady Green Wave had 14 hits and took advantage of six Lady Pirates errors.

“Their pitching was a lot slower than normal. We had some players step up today that hadn’t been doing so lately,” Blackwell said.

Cathedral (10-7, 4-0) plays host to Bogue Chitto at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Natchez High 14, South Pike 1

NATCHEZ — The Natchez High Lady Bulldogs finally picked up their first win of the 2015 season as they defeated the South Pike Lady Eagles 14-1 in four innings Tuesday afternoon.

Orianna Howell got the win on the mound for Natchez High and first-year head coach Falana McDaniel.

“We kept capitalizing on their mistakes. I kept encouraging the girls to stay focused and not worry about the scoreboard. That helped them a lot,” McDaniel said. “I told them before the game, ‘You will win.’ That encouraged them to believe.

Natchez High (1-4) next plays at 6 p.m. Saturday at Port Gibson.
