NATCHEZ — Natchez High School boys finished fourth and the girls finished fifth in the 2015 MHSAA Class 5A State Track and Field Meet Friday.
Ernesha Chatman finished in first place on the long jump with an 18.3, while Zyaire Ewing took home second place finishes in high jump and shot put.
“(Ernesha) went out there and blew it out,” Natchez track coach Larry Wesley said. “In the high jump and in the shot put (Zyaire) was outstanding. It’s been a few years since we had somebody grace the cover, and when we got there they handed me a program and Zyaire right on the front.”
Shamarra Grover finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, while seventh grader Jaliyah Harding finished sixth in the 800-meter run, Shalyn William finished eighth in the 300-meter and Chazlin King finished fifth in the girls discus throw. Kenya Davis took fourth in the 3200-meter run.
Meanwhile, the boys won the 4X100 meter relay. The combined efforts of Chris Crockett, John Ferguson, Freddie Singleton and Malik Byrd willed Natchez to victory.
Daryl Jones took fourth in the 3200-meter, Ferguson was seventh in the 100-meter dash, Willie Johnson was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles, Byrd was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, Singleton was third in the boys long jump and 200-meter dash and Brandon Green was fifth in the pole vault.
Overall, Wesley said it was a tough meet, but he was still proud of bringing boys and girls south state champions to the event.
“Even before we went into battle, I knew we were going to have a fight on our hands,” Wesley said. “I’m satisfied though.”
