NATCHEZ — Natchez-Adams School District Superintendent Dr. Frederick Hill interviewed on Tuesday for the superintendent’s job in Flint, Mich.

“All I have to say about that is I am no longer a candidate for the job in Flint,” Hill said Friday morning.

Hill refused to say whether he had withdrawn his name from consideration or was eliminated by the Flint school board during the selection process.

However, mlive.com, the website of the Flint Journal, reported Friday morning the Flint school board narrowed its search from six to two candidates, and Hill did not make the cut.

Natchez-Adams School Board members voted three-to-two Thursday night to extend Hill’s contract by three years.

Asked about his reaction to being given a three-year contract extension by the Natchez-Adams school board, he said, “I’m grateful I was given this opportunity.”

When asked to comment on some of the negative reaction in the community to changes he has made in the school district, Hill said, “Anyone who wants to know anything about what’s going on in the school district can come to a board meeting.”

During his interview in Flint on Tuesday, Hill told the Flint school board members he wanted to be Flint’s next school superintendent because he sees that district in the midst of a transformation and wants to be part of it, the Flint Journal reported.

“I did my research on Flint,” Hill told the Flint board members, according to the story. “I really want to be here.”

School board member Amos James Jr., who was appointed to the school board by the City of Natchez in April, said he was unaware Hill had interviewed for another job.

“I didn’t know anything about it,” James said. “He has the right to seek other opportunities. I just got on the board and haven’t had a chance to look at things yet.”

Cynthia Smith, who was appointed to the school board by Adams County supervisors and his been vocal about her concern over some of the changes Hill has made in personnel in the school district, said she was not aware Hill had interviewed for another position.

“No, I was not aware of it, but it would not have changed how I voted last night,” Smith said. She voted no to Hill’s contract extension.

Board members Thelma Newsome and Benny Wright, who voted for Hill’s three-year contract extension, did not return phone calls seeking their comments on Friday.

Board President Tim Blalock Jr., who cast the tie vote in favor of extending Hill’s contract, also did not return a phone message left at his office Friday seeking comment.
