VIDALIA — A couple home runs and costly errors in the field made way for an 8-1 Concordia Parish victory against Catahoula Parish in Majors action Saturday afternoon.

Part of the Concordia Recreation District 3 Complex’s Dixie Youth Open tournament, which hosted teams from across Louisiana and Mississippi in multiple leagues, Concordia Parish took advantage of several openings presented to it. Back-to-back errors in the third inning set the table for a 2-RBI single by Cody Brown to give Concordia Parish a 3-1 lead.

“It’s what we tell them every inning is just put the ball in play and let them make the mistakes,” Concordia Parish head coach Shaun McDonald said.

While Concordia Parish’s Brett Walsworth and Rhet McDonald combined for 11 strikeouts and only one earned run in the victory, the offense continued to put the ball in play, racking up six hits in the win.

Dylan LaPrairie recorded the first run of the game when he took a high fastball over the centerfield wall.

“He’s been hot at the plate,” McDonald said. “He has the power to hit it out anywhere.”

Peyton Fort put the exclamation point on the game in the fifth inning with an inside the park home run, while Brown recorded an RBI double later in the inning.

Oak Grove 9, Natchez 1 (Minors)

Despite falling 9-1 to Oak Grove, Natchez head coach Tim Cotton said the game was favorable for his young all-star team in a variety of ways.

“We signed up to get more experience,” Cotton said. “We’re a 9-year-old team, and the team that we played is largely a 10-year-old team, but the experience that we’re giving these guys is invaluable. It was fun for us, and this was a really great tournament.”

Natchez trailed by one run after two innings played, and in those innings, Matt Kaiser, Drew Strawbridge and Justin Hawkins made contact with the ball, which was pleasing to Cotton. Kaiser recorded a single in the first inning.

Unfortunately for Natchez, pitcher Jack Krevolin got in a bit of trouble in the third inning, as Oak Grove recorded seven hits in the inning, scoring eight runs on Natchez in the process.

In the bottom of the third inning, before the game was called for time constraints, Hunter Townsend recorded a single and scored on Jaylin Davis’ single.

“A hit in the hole here or another hit in another circumstance and it’s a completely different game, but again, we have a lot of 9-year-old kids,” Cotton said. “All in all, it’s a learning experience, and we’re happy.”
