EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary (Mary Owen) Junkin, 89, who died at 1:28 a.m., Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind., will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Seton Residence Chapel.06:26 SisterMaryJunkin obitpic

Burial will follow at the St. Joseph Cemetery under the direction of Ziemer Funeral Home in Evansville.

A wake service will be at 6:30 p.m. today at the chapel.

Sister Mary was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Lake Providence, La., the daughter of William and Bertha Zurhellen Junkin of Natchez.

She was a 1943 graduate of St. Joseph High School in Natchez. She received a bachelor of arts in English from Our Lady of the Lake in San Antonio, Texas, in 1947.

Sister entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis in 1950.

Sister Mary began her ministry in education at St. Joseph School in New Orleans in 1951, and later taught at Laboure High School and Marillac College in St. Louis, St. Vincent High School in Perryville, Mo., Marillac High School in Northfield, Ill., and Cathedral Schools in Natchez.

Sister Mary also served as principal of Cathedral Schools in Natchez, Our Lady of Victories High School in Pascagoula and Vincent Gray Alternative High School in East St. Louis, Ill., until 1996 when she began her ministry as a librarian at Cathedral Schools and St. Mary’s Parish in Natchez. In 2003, Sister Mary assumed the duty of archival assistant and librarian at Mater Dei Provincialate and Seton Residence in Evansville and continued in the ministry of prayer at Seton Residence until the time of her death.

Sister Mary was preceded in death by her parents,  Jennie Blankenship Junkin; two sisters, Margaret (Sister Catherine) Junkin, D.C., and Edwina Blanchard and husband, Gene; and three brothers, William Junkin and wife, Alma, George Junkin and wife, Ninette, and Richard Smith and wife, Virginia.

Survivors include one sister, Marty Seibert and husband, J.W. III; niece, Dr. Bertha Blanchard and a number of other nieces and nephews; her Sisters in the community and a number of friends.
