PONCHATOULA, La. — Less than 24 hours after a comeback win over Alexandria, the Ferriday Gators took care of business Monday night in a 14-2 win over Oakdale to remain undefeated at the Dixie Debs State Tournament.

Winning pitcher Marty Lewis combined with Emilee Howard and Bailey Book to limit Oakdale to just one hit. And that was a two-run home run off Lewis in the top of the first inning.

Lewis ended up striking out the side in the top of the first and went two total innings. Howard pitched the next two innings and struck out three batters. Book pitched a three-up, three-down top of the fifth.

“We’re in pretty good shape with our pitching,” Gators coach Rut Horne said.

The Gators erased that early deficit with a four-run rally in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead for good. They added three runs in each of the next two innings and put the game completely out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Tali Beard went 2-for-2 with a home run, Lewis helped her cause by going 2-for-2, and Brianna Henson belted two doubles. As a team, Ferriday finished with 11 base hits.

Up next for the Ferriday Gators is another showdown with Alexandria, although this time the stakes are much higher. Game time is set for 6 p.m. today. If Ferriday wins this game, it is the state champion. If Alexandria win, it will force a winner-take-all second game for the state championship.

On Sunday night, the Ferriday Gators rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings and then scored three runs in the top of the 10th for a dramatic 10-7 win over Alexandria.

“We were down 7-3 with two outs in the last inning and tied it and it went three extra innings and we won it,” Horne said.

Tali Beard, Michala Hughes and Bailey Book combined for six hits and five runs batted in to lead Ferriday’s offense. Which was key because there were an astonishing eight lead changes during the game.

Monroe 10, Concordia Parish 14s 9

PINEVILLE, La. — The Concordia Parish 14-year-old All-Stars were just two outs away from forcing a second and deciding game in what would have been the championship round of the Louisiana Dixie Youth Pre-Majors State Tournament.

Instead, the Monroe All-Stars rallied with the bases loaded to score six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for an incredible 10-9 victory Monday afternoon to win the state championship.

“We had them 9-4 in the bottom of the seventh,” Concordia Parish 14s coach Matt Souderes said. “They had the bases loaded with one out. They tied it a 9-9 and then Caden Poole walked the last runner in.”

Even though the loss ended the season for the Concordia Parish 14-year-old All-Stars, Souderes said he was proud of the way his team played not only against a good Monroe team, but during the tournament.

“The team played awesome. Everybody hit the ball well. They showed great discipline at the plate,” Souderes said.
