NATCHEZ — Only six golfers shot under 70 in the first round of the 2015 Bill McKinney Memorial City Golf Championship at Duncan Park Saturday afternoon.

Among those golfers was McKinney’s grandson Kenny Weeks, who has traveled from Eugene, Oregon to participate in the city championship since 2009.

“I was surprised,” Weeks said. “I thought I would be further back, but everybody seemed to let shots get away today. I look back today and think I probably gave away four or five shots.”

Casey Ham holds the lead after day one with a 66. Jordan Famer trails Ham by two strokes with a 68, while Bill Byrne, Pete Powell, Tom Bryant and Weeks are all tied for third with a 70.

Weeks said the conditions at Duncan Park were perfect for the event, and was very complimentary toward the course.

“This golf course is 180-degree difference than what it was when I was a kid,” Weeks said.

Lee Jones, Jeff Anderson and Richard Edgin each shot a 72, while Jay Lessley, Kevin Smith Jr. and Wesley Rodgers shot a 73.

Weeks said with the way everyone played in the first round, it could be anyone’s championship to grab today in the final round.

“We were walking off the course, and someone said, ‘Well if you shoot 66 tomorrow, you have a chance,” Weeks said. “You never know how these things go, but it could be done.”
