WATERPROOF — Four inmates who escaped from the Tensas Parish Correctional Center Monday have been recaptured.

One of the men, Charles Baughman, was captured Monday evening within three miles of the prison facility.

“Basically, he was a little older than the other guys, and he couldn’t keep up with them, got separated, and they just left him,” Tensas Parish Sheriff Rickey Jones said.

The other three inmates — Kindall Anderson, Travis Cox and Thomas Furry — were reportedly captured at a residence in Shreveport Tuesday.

Jones said the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Louisiana State Police and local law enforcement helped in the capture of the men in Shreveport.

The escapees had apparently stolen a truck from Concordia Parish and used it to get to Shreveport, Jones said.

The inmates apparently escaped the correctional center in Waterproof by exiting a door after doing what Jones characterized as “manipulating the lock.”

The search for the four men included foot and air searches by local sheriff’s offices, the state police and the Louisiana Department of Corrections.

“All of those offices were at our disposal, and it is pretty good to have that many people who will work together for a common goal, which was to get these guys back in off the streets without major incident,” Jones said.

The escape also led to the brief lockdown of two Concordia Parish schools Tuesday.

Concordia Parish Superintendent of Schools Paul Nelson said the school district received word someone had reported seeing one of the inmates in the area of Johnson Street in Ferriday — a report that later proved to be unfounded.

“Johnson Street is not too far away from Ferriday High School and Ferriday Lower Elementary School, and so when we got the call we asked that both schools be locked down,” Nelson said.

“We had no information that the man was at the campuses, it was just a general precaution.”

The lockdown was lifted shortly after search teams left the area of the schools, Nelson said.
